Artist Lecture: Janice Nowinski

Janice Nowinski

Janice Nowinski is an up and coming painter that came to UNH a while back. Born and raised in New York, and attended the prominent Yale university for her MFA. Her first painting were of masterpieces, copying works of well known artist and learning from it, eventually it moved into still life and then self portraits. Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne was a great influence for a lot of her painting even incorporating his well known peaches into majority of her painting.  Nowinski's work is very abstracted, raw and her focus is shapes. How the structure of shapes goes hand in hand with another.

It was surprising the path she took in life. As a young teen, she was very confused about what to do with her life and battled with the idea of going to art school. After a battle, she realized that painting made her happy and enjoyed being in the world of arts.

Gong into this  lecture, I did not know what to expect. Her paintings are beautiful and simple, and yet it took such a long time to create. I was also amazed at the amount of symbolism and meaning behind everything she placed in her paintings. She put so much thought into each work of art making it her precise and unique in her own way.

Abstract art is not an interest of mine. One thing that I found to be interesting is that although her still life was an abstraction, it still showed the underlying image making it possible to see what the item was. This was interesting because it's like the viewer see what the artist see when she was painting the image.
