Artist Lecture: Gideon Bok

The lecture Gideon Bok presented was highly disappointing. I found most of his work very repetitive and I just wish he showed more of a diversity. I did find some of the large scale painting that he shows to be interesting. I like the size, I like these large scale paintings. He really shows the different perspective well, and that the viewer really get a sense of being in the room.

Bok started these large, scale, perspective paintings about four to five years ago and before that he spent teaching and traveling. Most of his paintings shows shows perception from around the studio and using it as a learning tool. He looks at abstract impressionist as an influence for most of his work, and how they use paint as a way to develop a language through the paint. He uses his repetition as a tool to make the scene more interesting.

After he moved back to his mother's farm in Rockland, Me he began the panel paintings. His paintings shows the industrial, modern and urban setting. His painting shows direct measurement of the room. He uses a lot of mathematical measurement to map out the room he is painting. He uses the different panel, the diptych, as a way to challenge the spread of the painting. The resolution that he concluded through his works is that he is able to show multiple perception. His works reminds me of looking into a fish eye lens and taking a photograph.

One thing that he recently started doing is started putting albums into his painting. I find it terrible corny. I didn't like his album series compared to his large scale ones. As said before, I find it very disappointing that he showed a very limited work. It all seem to blend one after the other. Also, his tone when speaking could be worked on. As someone presenting a lecture, I would think you would want to keep the viewer awake.
